I visited Cemaes in June 2022 and was delighted to see the Charles Henry Ashley moored in the harbour. My family has a long history of sailing a beautiful seabird half-rater called “Shearwater” at Trearddur Bay on Anglesey. She turned 100 a couple of years ago after significant expenditure about 25 years ago to keep her seaworthy. So, we have a particular soft spot for historic sail boats and the RNLI, who brave the seas around Ynys Môn to save those in peril. I was determined to paint this sailed lifeboat built in 1907, but other things got in the way until earlier this summer I saw the Afloat or Ashore painting competition. I returned to the National Historic Ships UK Register to check my spelling of the ship’s name after finishing the painting this month to find devastating news. I must confess I cried on reading that Charles Henry Ashley would not be returning to sea again, being just this summer deemed unsafe to use anymore as a training sailboat and beyond practical and economic repair. I was relieved to read that Cemaes Boat Club is fundraising towards preserving Charles Henry Ashley for the future and for a suitable location where she can be stored for visitors to enjoy her history. As seafaring folk sailing in this remarkable part of North Wales, our heritage is just so fragile. My use of purple Amethyst and black Haematite Genuine, the colours of mourning, for the mud and stones of the Harbour now feels a little prescient. Cadwch yn ddiogel rwan/ Keep safe now, Charles Henry Ashley, ar ôl achub eraill/ after saving others.

“The Painted Sail” Historic sailing boat owners Sam & Andy work along side many artist, musicians, writers and volunteers with heritage open days to help raise funds for the renovation of Lady Daphne, winning them the National Historic Ships Uk Marsh voilunteer Award in 2023 and National Historic Ships Uk Static ship of the year award 2024. Every year the Daphne volunteers help paint her huge sails and i was kindly given a piece of her sail to paint on. So i have chosen to work on a piece of folk art inspired by Daphnes community spirit connecting through story telling created for the now but reflecting on her past and the importance of Charlestown Harbour and the china clay industry. As a local artist I have been collaborating with owners Sam & Andy for a while now creating below deck art exhibitions, workshops and my open studio 24 which had hundreds of visitors on board in a sell out show. I’m also part of the F.O.LD friends of Lady Daphne. So it has been a pleasure to enter this piece of folk art reflecting my time spent on this beautiful 101 year old barge docked in Charlestown Harbour.

They say the old ways are best, and the 101 yr-old Victorious is a great example of looking to the past to find a solution that helps minimize the CO2 footprint of today’s shipping industry. This is the focus of my painting where Victorious, originally built as a fishing smack, is transporting coffee, potatoes, wine and whisky from Lincolnshire, across the Wash to north Norfolk, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. To make this painting as accurate as possible, I have enjoyed collaborating with the vessel’s owner, Henry Chamberlain of the Coastal Exploration Company as I admire his environmental values and ideals with his growing fleet of traditional Norfolk boats to keep them working for future generations to enjoy. For me as an artist, this is a great creative process as I have learned a lot about the vessel, which helped me when painting the scene.

This is a painting of St. Vincent a Zulu Herring lugger built in 1910 and fully restored recently at the Johnson and Loftus Yard in the North West Highlands over 2021 and 2023. She was launched in May 2023 . This is a painting of her when she was under cover on the Slipway being re calked after extensive new planking was fitted. I visited the yard over the course of the restoration and drew and pained on site recording the project visually. I also have had the chance to sail on her. After being relaunched in May I joined her on the circumnavigation of the Highlands, taking her from Ullapool to the Portsoy Traditional Boat festival on the east coast by the Pentland Firth, and back around to the west coast by the Caledonian Canal. The SS Freshspring, built in 1946 is moored in my hometown of Bideford and is being restored by a trust set up for that purpose. I started to draw and paint the ship as soon as it arrived on the River Torridge. Having explored the exterior I turned to drawing and painting the engine room. The triple expansion reciprocating engine provides a fascinating series of compositional possibilities. My Freshspring work is informed by visits to the ship to make drawings and paintings of both the exterior and interior. I have attended talks and tours around the ship and of similar projects such as the SS Shieldhall in Southampton.

When Harland and Wolff took over the Appledore Shipyard one of their first activities was to undertake an ultrasound scan of the hull of the Freshspring. Being part of the trust undertaking the restoration of the ship, which was built in 1946, I was invited to the shipyard to observe and make drawings of the ship in the yard. I was impressed by the cathedral like lighting in the yard and the drama of the ship in the dry dock.My Freshspring work is informed by visits to the ship to make drawings and paintings of both the exterior and interior. ‘Spitfire of the Seas’, MGB 81 returns to Portsmouth Harbour - Registration number 524, Status National Historic Fleet - When deciding to put work forward for ‘Afloat or Ashore’, I wanted my work to be very much afloat and to represent my home city of Portsmouth and the Hampshire County. - ‘Spitfire of the Seas’ began en plein air. I arrived in Portsmouth with my kit and the intension of capturing activity out on the water. About half an hour after setting up my 12 x 16 board, MGB 81 came into view. I could not believe my luck and I was hopeful she may be on the historic ship register. At this stage, my board already had details of the foreshore, mid water, distant seashore, and features of the Isle of Wight plotted in. - MGB 81 was powering through the Solent, so I had to be quick to get any kind of observations down. I captured on-site her position in the water in relation to the horizon line, her length to height ratio, the shape of her hull and her impact as she displaced the water. After she passed, I was able to continue with on-site observations around these marks. I was really looking forward to getting this back to my studio to complete, it felt like an exciting piece of work. I also took the time to research her history and how I came to have the chance to see her in Portsmouth that day. - MGB 81 is a 71.5ft Motor Gun Boat built by the British Powerboat Company and commissioned for the Royal Navy in 1942. At this time, she was among the fastest boats of her type in the world, and she is now the only operational MGB in the world. Her role in WW2 included action in the English Channel and Hook of Holland, attacking enemy torpedo boats and landing secret agents on occupied soil. MGB 81 was later involved in the D-Day Operations off Omaha Beach, 6th June 1944. - After learning of her restoration and after making a few calls, I had the great pleasure of speaking to an engineer who was involved in her restoration. He was also part of a team who crossed the channel in MGB 81 for the D-Day commemorations and he gave details of his incredibly special personal experience of passing under Pegasus Bridge. - The experience of the restoration team was a key factor in MGB 81 being restored at the Hampshire shipyard. They used traditional shipwrighting knowledge to refit MGB 81 but in state-of-the-art facilities. The restoration team is supported by an award-winning apprenticeship scheme that ensures these skills are passed onto the next generation of ship builders.

Having received information from Nikki Alford, Bessie Ellen's skipper, about BE's activity over the weekend 3/4 August, I worked out where to do this painting from. Penlee Point (close to Rame Head Peninsula) was the ideal spot with Fort Picklecombe and Plymouth Sound in the background. When visited, BE was alongside in Sutton Harbour, Plymouth and about to depart with suitably clad passengers on a day sailing experience. The quick sketch in the rain provided some understanding of her lines and rigging - all part of my B-E experience. The supporting photo catches me working up the painting on location with BE returning to Plymouth Sound. By coincidence I met up with her again in Penzance, but the weather was atrocious with all hatches closed.

When visiting the Mayflower Marina in Plymouth, a useful on-board discussion was had with Jolie Brise's skipper (Harriet Steptoe) on 20 August to understand JB's exit from Plymouth Sound. Great to meet the young and enthusiastic trainee crew, some of whom were waiting for GCSE results! This was painted near Kingsand/Cawsand as JB left Plymouth Sound, having completed work-up training. What a smashing example of a pilot cutter she is and such a strong motivator for youngsters from Dauntseys School - next stop for them on this passage was France. Artistic licence was used for the bowsprit activity; I've since been told it triggered lots of banter amongst the crew about who was out there!

As part of her summer South West coastal programme, Waverley made her way up the Tamar from Sutton Harbour, Plymouth to the bridges at Saltash with over 400 on board on a late August evening. Paddle steamer and paddle boarders ... I couldn't resist including them! Sketched from Waterside in Saltash, the painting marks a special occasion with 2 icons (Waverley + Brunel) bowing to each other's presence and significance.

Several years ago the Kathleen & May was bought to Bideford for restoration. At the time I did many paintings and drawings on the progress and the painting here is from a sketch I made at the time and have now produced as a painting for this exhibition.

I live, swim and gig row in Hayle and am in the harbour almost daily throughout the year. Two summers ago I started to draw this wonderful lifeboat in the boatyard and soon discovered the many stories of “the oldest lifeboat in the world”. When I went back to carry on with my drawing the boat had gone. I enquired in St Ives and found it had been used for boat trips briefly in 2023, how I would have loved to have journeyed on her. Meanwhile I saw this open call and was amazed and delighted to see the boat listed. So I decided to finish it from the photo reference I had. It was a struggle because I didn’t take the photos as an aide to work from, I favour working from direct observation. Inevitably my imagination kicked in so as well as the boat in the boatyard I created a vision of how the lifeboat might once have looked in service in a treacherous sea saving lives; human and canine, as well as sailing with the small ships to Dunkirk. An honour to draw the James Stevens No 10.

I have spoken to the owner of the Ripple - John Lambourne & Rob Mcdowell from the local National Historic Boats in Newlyn. They told me she hasn’t sailed in 8 years but was once a working fishing boat. Built in 1896, and over time has been lengthened, survived a fire and sinking! I sketched the Ripple first deciding on high tide and evening atmosphere to match the age & feel of the boat. I painted en plein air early evening and captured the moments as it got darker into the night. It’s an old boat in an old harbour but surrounded by current working fishing boats which I wanted to include as it’s now part of her story.

Vigilance is undergoing a huge restoration at Stirling and Son slipway number one. The shipyard is the world’s oldest working covered slipway. The owner called it his “wooden cathedral”. On the day of my visit, there was a major clear up underway. You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and it seems that you can’t restore 100 year old trawlers without a whole heap of cut up wood.
