They say the old ways are best, and the 101 yr-old Victorious is a great example of looking to the past to find a solution that helps minimize the CO2 footprint of today’s shipping industry. This is the focus of my painting where Victorious, originally built as a fishing smack, is transporting coffee, potatoes, wine and whisky from Lincolnshire, across the Wash to north Norfolk, in an environmentally friendly and sustainable way. To make this painting as accurate as possible, I have enjoyed collaborating with the vessel’s owner, Henry Chamberlain of the Coastal Exploration Company as I admire his environmental values and ideals with his growing fleet of traditional Norfolk boats to keep them working for future generations to enjoy. For me as an artist, this is a great creative process as I have learned a lot about the vessel, which helped me when painting the scene.
