Vigilance is undergoing a huge restoration at Stirling and Son slipway number one. The shipyard is the world’s oldest working covered slipway. The owner called it his “wooden cathedral”. On the day of my visit, there was a major clear up underway. You can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs and it seems that you can’t restore 100 year old trawlers without a whole heap of cut up wood.

This painting captures the planks or boards being fitted with some imaginative steam and clamping solutions. The skilled shipwrights at Stirling and Sons, Plymouth work closely together to expertly bend and fix the heavy boards in place.
